Background: Selective androgen receptor modulators (SARMs) are small synthetic drug molecules that are still not approved as medicine in Europe or the United States but are sold on illegal websites to improve sport performance, particularly bodybuilding. Aim: To address the quality issues of illegal SARM products and their increasing diffusion in Italy with their potential health risks for consumers. Methods: Web-based tools were used to investigate retail websites, trending searches, and information exchange via social media. Thirteen SARM products, purchased on retail websites accessible from Italy, were subject to visual inspection and chemical analysis by mass spectrometry and quantitative nuclear magnetic resonance. Outcomes: The primary outcome was demonstration of additional health risks due to the illicit presence of other active ingredients, contamination, and misdosage in SARM products sold on the internet. The secondary outcome was to show the increasing trend of interest in Italy for these products. Results: Most websites reported misleading information; specifically, the statement "for research only" was reported notwithstanding indications on dosage and training phases. The trending search showed that interest toward SARMs increased in Italy in the last years. The use of these products is clearly encouraged by the emerging phenomenon of "broscience" as revealed in socials. Visual inspection evidenced nonconform labeling. Qualitative analysis confirmed the presence of the stated SARM in about 70% of samples. In 23% of samples, the expected SARM was not detected but a different one instead, and in 1 sample, no SARMs were detected. Other undeclared pharmaceutical substances (tamoxifen, clomifene, testosterone, epimethandienone, tadalafil) were measured in 30% of samples. The copresence of >1 active substance was observed in >60% of samples. Quantitative nuclear magnetic resonance data showed nonuniform content ranging from 30% to 90% of the label claim. Clinical Implications: The use of SARMs, in the presence of unexpected life-threatening reactions in persons using the products to increase sport performance, should be assessed. Strengths and Limitations: This investigation involved an integrated approach to study SARM products and related sociologic aspects. The main shortcomings are the limited number of samples and retail websites in the clear web investigated. Conclusion: SARMs sold online as food supplement-like products represent a health hazard due to the presence of unapproved and undeclared active substances. The presence of contaminants clearly indicates the absence of good manufacturing practices in the production, which increases the health risks.

The global food trade provides a means of disseminating antimicrobial resistant (AMR) bacteria and genes. Using selective media, carbapenem-resistant species of Enterobacterales (Providencia sp. and Citrobacter sp.), were detected in a single package of imported frozen shrimp purchased from a grocery store in Ohio, USA. Polymerase chain reaction confirmed that both isolates harbored blaNDM-1 genes. Following PacBio long read sequencing, the sequences were annotated using the NCBI Prokaryotic Genome Annotation Pipeline. The blaNDM-1 genes were found in IncC plasmids, each with different antimicrobial resistance island configuration. We found that the blaNDM-1 AMR islands had close relationships with previously reported environmental, food, and clinical isolates detected in Asia and the United States, highlighting the importance of the food chain in the global dissemination of antimicrobial resistance.

BACKGROUND: Latin American countries are often limited in the availability of food outlet data. There is a need to use online search engines that allow the identification of food outlets and assess their agreement with field observations. We aimed to assess the agreement in the density of food outlets provided by a web collaborative data (Google) against the density obtained from an administrative registry. We also determined whether the agreement differed by type of food outlet and by area-level socioeconomic deprivation. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we analyzed 1,693 census tracts from the municipalities of Hermosillo, Leon, Oaxaca de Juarez, and Tlalpan. The Google service was used to develop a tool for the automatic acquisition of food outlet data. To assess agreement, we compared food outlet densities obtained with Google against those registered in the National Statistical Directory of Economic Units (DENUE). Continuous densities were assessed using Bland-Altman plots and concordance correlation coefficient (CCC), while agreement across tertiles of density was estimated using weighted kappa. RESULTS: The CCC indicated a strong correlation between Google and DENUE in the overall sample (0.75); by food outlet, most of the correlations were from negligible (0.08) to moderate (0.58). The CCC showed a weaker correlation as deprivation increased. Weighted kappa indicated substantial agreement between Google and DENUE across all census tracts (0.64). By type of food outlet, the weighted kappa showed substantial agreement for restaurants (0.69) and specialty food stores (0.68); the agreement was moderate for convenience stores/small food retail stores (0.49) and fair for candy/ice cream stores (0.30). Weighted kappa indicated substantial agreement in low-deprivation areas (0.63); in very high-deprivation areas, the agreement was moderate (0.42). CONCLUSIONS: Google could be useful in assessing fixed food outlet densities as a categorical indicator, especially for some establishments, like specialty food stores and restaurants. The data could also be informative of the availability of fixed food outlets, particularly in less deprived areas.

This study investigated the effects of a novel steak fabrication method, involving removal of both subcutaneous and intermuscular fats between the longissimus thoracis (LT) and spinalis dorsi (SD) muscles before cooking, on beef ribeye steak palatability and calorie content. Canada AA (n = 10) and AAA (n = 10) ribeyes were fabricated into steaks either with (fat-on) or without (fat-off) subcutaneous and intermuscular fats. Fat-on steaks had shorter cooking times and lower cooking losses than fat-off steaks (P < 0.001), regardless of quality grade. There were treatment × quality grade interactions for initial (P < 0.01) and sustainable juiciness (P < 0.05) of the LT samples and initial juiciness (P < 0.05) of the SD samples, with the fat-on AA samples being more juicy than the fat-off AA samples, but the AAA treatments were not different from each other. Regardless of quality grade, fewer panelist responses indicated livery flavour (P < 0.05) for fat-on compared to fat-off LT samples. Regardless of fat-on/fat-off treatment, AA compared to AAA samples had more responses for bloody/serumy (P < 0.01) and unidentified off-flavours (P < 0.05) in LT samples. However, AAA samples had more responses for metallic off-flavour in LT (P = 0.059) and SD (P < 0.05). There were no differences in calorie content between fat-on compared to fat-off steaks (P > 0.1) regardless of quality grade and muscle type, or between AA and AAA steaks regardless of cooking with fat-on or off (P > 0.1). Maintaining the subcutaneous and intermuscular fats while cooking will improve ribeye steak palatability without increasing calorie content, especially for leaner steaks.

Background: The Western Pacific Region has the highest rate of cigarette smoking in the world. In this region, Mongolia has ratified the WHO FCTC treaty and, as part of treaty implementation, has monitored school tobacco use in children using the 2014 Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) and 2019 GYTS. Our objective was to examine the spatial and economic factors associated with cigarette use in schoolchildren of Mongolia. Methods: The 2014 and 2019 GYTS are the most recent and comprehensive national surveys of tobacco use in schoolchildren in Mongolia and are cross-sectional, stratified, multi-stage cluster surveys of 13-15 year-old schoolchildren (7,298 in 2014, 4,146 in 2019) selected from urban and rural schools. For each survey, we conducted logistic regression modelling to examine whether spatial (proximity of cigarette sales to schools), economic (pocket money available to school children), and other environmental/contextual factors were predictors of cigarette use (all, single sticks) in schoolchildren. Results: We found that 1)the prevalence of vendors selling cigarettes near schools increased from 65% in the 2014 GYTS to 94% in the 2019 GYTS, 2) sales of cigarettes near schools were associated with increased current smoking of all cigarettes and this effect increased from a marginal 31% increase in odds in 2014 (OR [95% confidence interval(CI)]=1.31 [0.99, 1.73]) to a 416% increase in odds in 2019 (OR [95% CI]=5.16[3.31, 8.05]), 3) sales of cigarettes near schools were associated with a substantial increase in odds of smoking single cigarettes in 2014 (OR [95% CI]=1.87 [1.14,3.06]) and in 2019 (OR[95% CI]=2.70 [1.42, 5.12]). We also found that smoking of all cigarettes was higher when student pocket money exceeded the price of the cigarette pack (approximately 1.8 USD) and also when parents and/or peers were smokers. Conclusions: Despite the 2012 National Tobacco Laws banning sales of cigarettes and single cigarettes to schoolchildren near schools, the most recent national surveys (2014-2019) have shown that these sales are increasing. We provide new findings indicating that despite the higher pricing of cigarette packs (relative to the region), illicit sales of single cigarettes are targeting schoolchildren near their schools.

Reporting key dietary indicators from sales data can help us guide store decision makers in developing effective store policy to support healthier customer purchases. We aimed to develop a web-based reporting tool of key dietary indicators from sales data to support health-promoting policy and practice in stores in geographically remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Tool development included identifying key dietary indicators (informed by sales data from 31 stores), community consultation (19 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander store directors and two store managers) and a web-build. Tool evaluation involved feedback interviews with stakeholders (25 store managers and two nutritionists). Key dietary indicators aligned with Australian Dietary Guideline food groupings and recommendations. An online portal for accessing and customising reports was built. Stakeholder feedback indicated that the strengths of the reports were the visuals, ease of interpretation, providing information that was not currently available and potential to increase capacity to support healthy food retailing. Difficulties were defining healthiness classification with alignment to other nutrition guidelines used and ensuring reports reached relevant store decision makers. This tool may be valuable to support store decision makers in identifying and prioritising nutrition issues and optimising the health-enabling attributes of stores.

Carbon footprint assessment of retail is necessary to optimize procurement strategies and adopt sustainable shopping habits. However, estimating carbon footprints is a complex task, given the diversity of existing distribution channels. Average values for carbon emissions of "conventional" retail (i.e., purchasing and receiving the product directly at the physical point of sale) found in most studies mask a heterogeneous reality: different retail strategies entail diverse shopping behavior for consumers, as well as varied procurement processes for outlets. In this paper, we propose a methodology to assess greenhouse gas (GHG) impacts of different distribution systems related to the consumption of goods in the Paris Region by coupling traditional transport modeling with a life-cycle assessment (LCA) approach. We model and compare six distribution systems, including five traditional retail formats (hypermarkets, supermarkets, small generalist retail, small food retail, and small nonfood retail) and E-commerce home deliveries. Our model includes warehouse activity, shop and home delivery, shop energy consumption, consumer mobility, and goods packaging. Overall, we conclude that E-commerce emits fewer GHG emissions than retail outlets per kilogram of product purchased. This result is in line with the existing literature on the topic. However, the carbon footprint varies greatly within the case study depending on the characteristics of the logistics procurement processes of outlets, the behavior of shoppers, and spatial characteristics.

BACKGROUND: Retail workers comprise millions of people, but little is known about their eating behaviors and food consumption patterns. OBJECTIVE: To examine the healthy eating behaviors and food consumption frequencies of retail workers in shopping malls. METHODS: The sample of this descriptive study consisted of 385 retail employees working in ready-made garment stores of shopping malls in Istanbul (42% of those eligible). A descriptive information form, the nutrition subscale of the Health-promoting Lifestyle Profile (HPLP), and the Food Consumption Frequency Survey were used as data collection tools. RESULTS: It was determined that more than half of the participants skipped breakfast and other meals and consumed fast food and packaged and acidic drinks five to six days a week. The mean score of the participants on the HPLP-nutrition subscale was determined to be 11.79±3.29. CONCLUSIONS: The retail workers in shopping malls were found to have insufficient healthy eating behaviors, a low frequency of healthy food consumption, and a high level of fast-food consumption. Maintaining healthy eating habits is crucial for the health of employees. It is necessary for workplaces to take steps to help their employees become aware of and practice healthy eating. Workplaces should also be encouraged to provide healthy food options for their employees.

Analysing customer loyalty card data is a novel method for assessing nutritional quality and changes in a population's food consumption. However, prior to its use, the thousands of grocery products available in stores must be reclassified from the retailer's original hierarchical structure into a structure that is suitable for the use of nutrition and health research. We created LoCard Food Classification (LCFC) and examined how it reflects the nutritional quality of the grocery product groups. Nutritional quality was considered the main criterion guiding the reclassification of the 3574 grocery product groups. Information on the main ingredient of the product group, purpose of use, and carbon footprint were also used at the more granular levels of LCFC. The main challenge in the reclassification was a lack of detailed information on the type of products included in each group, and that some of the groups included products that have opposite health effects. The final LCFC has four hierarchical levels and it is openly available online. After reclassification, the product groups were linked with the Finnish food composition database, and the nutrient profile was assessed by calculating the Nutrient Rich Food Index (NRFI) for each product group. Standard deviation in NRFI decreased from 0.21 of the least granular level to 0.08 of the most granular level of LCFC indicating that the most granular level of LCFC has more homogeneous nutritional quality. Studies that apply LCFC to examine loyalty card data with health and environmental outcomes are needed to further demonstrate its validity.

BACKGROUND: Higher cost of healthy foods may explain unhealthy dietary patterns in lower-income households. Unfortunately, combining food selection and nutrient intake data to price and expenditure is challenging. Food retailer's customer loyalty card data, linked to nutrient composition database, is a novel method for simultaneous exploration of food purchases, price, and nutrition. OBJECTIVES: We studied the associations between perceived income adequacy (PIA) as a grouping variable with price (per kilogram or megajoule) and the volume of purchases (percentage of expenditure or energy) simultaneously as outcome variables for 17 most purchased food groups. METHODS: We used 1-year (2018) loyalty card data from the largest grocery chain in Finland. Participants were 28,783 loyalty cardholders who made ≥41% of food purchases from the retailer and answered an online questionnaire at the midpoint of data collection. The 5-level PIA described the perceived financial situation in the household. Energy and nutrient content of foods purchased were from the Finnish Food Composition Database Fineli. We calculated the Nutrient Rich Food Index per 100 g food using 11 nutrients. Trends in prices and expenditures between PIA levels were analyzed using 2-sided Jonckheere-Terpstra tests, with false discovery rate control (Benjamini-Hochberg method) and confounder adjustments (inverse probability weighting). RESULTS: Lower PIA participants selected cheaper foods per kilogram and megajoule within most food groups. They also favored unhealthy food groups cheap in energy [<1 € (USD 1.18)/MJ]. Despite lower purchase price, the expenditure (%) among lower PIA was higher on alcohol, snacks, sugar-sweetened beverages, and sweets and chocolates. CONCLUSIONS: Participants with lower PIA showed stronger price awareness. It is crucial to consider the pricing of competing alternative food groups, when steering toward environmentally sustainable and healthier food purchases. Package labeling might also direct the selection of healthier choices among the less expensive items within a food group.

This study explores the integration of parallel compression and a two-phase ejector in transcritical CO2 refrigeration systems, aiming to improve efficiency and performance. This innovative approach bridges the gap between conventional approaches and explores new energy-saving potential. The study uses thermodynamic modeling, mathematical simulation, and in-depth analysis to look at energy and exergy performance in a new configuration for applications in the retail sector at medium evaporation temperatures. The work investigates thermodynamic phenomena in a novel cycle with steady-state conditions, low pressure differentials, and adiabatic efficiency. The model is validated against experimental and theoretical published data, revealing component-specific exergy destruction and key parameters. The novel cycle efficiently extracts heat at higher temperatures, outperforming conventional and parallel cycles. Exergetic efficiency surpasses the standard cycle, with gas cooler pressure and temperature dependence enhancing efficiency by 40%-45%. The distribution of exergy destruction percentages reveals efficiency determinants, emphasizing heat exchange optimization and ejector responsiveness in energy dissipation dynamics. The study investigates the coefficient of performance (COP) dependence on gas cooler pressure and temperature, revealing superior performance compared to conventional cycles. COP increases by 50% at 80 bars, indicating enhanced efficiency. The new cycle offers exceptional efficiency gains, with a COP enhancement of over 75% for evaporator temperature transitions. Comparative analysis shows a COP superiority of up to 53% for lower evaporator temperatures and 20% for higher evaporator temperatures, demonstrating substantial energy savings and improved performance across various operating conditions.

Background: Retail health clinics offer easy access and lower costs in seeking nonemergent and usually focused care. The objective of this observational study was to describe the use of retail clinic services by women at MinuteClinic at CVS, the largest network of retail clinics in the United States. Methods: The retail clinic's large database included complete national data for every in-person encounter as recorded on the same electronic health record. Virtual care and pharmacist-delivered services like COVID-19 testing were excluded from the analysis. The primary reason for the visit and the patient's age group (<15, 15-44, 45-64, ≥65 years) and self-reported sex were recorded at each encounter from the most recent 5 years (January 1, 2018, to December 31, 2022). Results: There were 17,969,483 encounters by women seeking care, and women ≥15 years old were more likely than men to attend the clinics. Half of all encounters (50.6%) were for non-gynecologic acute care, whereas one-third (33.6%) dealt with either an infection or the need for a vaccination. Gynecologic reasons involved 5.6% of all encounters in women ≥15 years of age. No obstetrical care was provided except for pregnancy testing with referral, acute non-obstetric needs, or guideline-recommended vaccinations. Conclusion: Women, especially of reproductive age, are more inclined than men to seek care at retail clinics. Acute care is the most common need, although requests for immunizations, infection screening and treatment, and reproductive health issues occurred often.

INTRODUCTION: As people increasingly migrate to online shopping platforms, hard-won improvements in requirements for consumer information provision at the point of sale are being eroded. An example is the alcohol pregnancy warning label for packaged alcoholic beverages that has been recently introduced in Australia and New Zealand. The aim of the present study was to assess the extent to which the pregnancy warning was visible at the online point of sale when the requirement became mandatory in August 2023. METHODS: Data for alcohol products sold on the websites of the two largest alcohol retailers in Australia were web-scraped from 1 to 3 August 2023. The captured data for 8343 alcoholic beverages were inspected to determine whether the pregnancy warning was visible. RESULTS: Virtually no products (0.1%) had the mandatory warning visible on the main sales page, and only 7% enabled visibility of the warning via optional product image rotation functionality. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: The almost complete absence of the mandatory pregnancy warnings on the main product pages of major alcohol retailers' websites highlights the regulatory problems posed by the emerging shift to online shopping. The very low prevalence of visible pregnancy warnings is likely to be an overestimate of the extent to which consumers would be exposed to warnings due to images being counted as being present regardless of their quality or readability. New regulation is needed to ensure that mandatory information requirements for harmful products are applied to online shopping contexts.

Forty LW × L pigs (20 boars and 20 gilts) (51.1 ± 0.41 kg) were allocated to a 2 × 2 × 2 factorial design with the respective factors being supplemental organic iron (Fe, 0 and 500 mg/kg), inulin (In, 0 and 50 g/kg) and sex (boars and gilts). After 5 weeks the animals were transported to an abattoir before slaughter and collection of samples. Serum iron was increased by supplemental Fe (28.4 v. 30.9 µmol/L, P = 0.05), although there was an interaction (P = 0.03) such that pigs fed diets with In had lower serum Fe concentrations than those without In (26.8 v. 32.3 µmol/L). Boars had lower (P < 0.01) haemoglobin (116 vs 125), haematocrit (36.7 v. 39.7%) and erythrocyte (6.6 v. 7.1 × 106/mL) concentrations than gilts. Dietary In increased liveweight gain (795 v. 869 g/d, P < 0.02) and carcass weight (62.9 v. 65.2 kg, P < 0.02). Dietary Fe or In supplementation did not improve muscle Longissimus thoracis et lumborum (LTL) total Fe concentration (P > 0.05). Muscle non-heme Fe concentration was higher in Fe-supplemented pigs (P < 0.04) and gilts (P < 0.05) than their counterparts. Muscle heme Fe concentration was greater (3.04 vs 2.51, P < 0.05) in boars than in gilts. The LTL marbling score was greater (P < 0.01) for In-supplemented pigs, and the response was more notable when Fe and In were fed together. These data show that dietary supplementation of Fe increased serum Fe and muscle non-heme Fe concentrations. Supplementation of In at 5% in the diet of finisher pigs improved liveweight gain and the marbling score of pork.

Introduction: Salmonella is a major foodborne pathogen worldwide that causes severe morbidity and mortality. It is mainly caused by consuming contaminated food, with retail food considered the primary source. Methods: In Guizhou, China, 102 Salmonella strains isolated from 2016 to 2021 underwent phenotypic antimicrobial resistance testing and whole-genome sequencing (WGS) to understand Salmonella diversity, including serotypes, sequencing types (STs), antimicrobial genes, virulence genes, plasmid types, multi-locus sequence types (MLST), and core genome MLST (cgMLST). Results and discussion: S.Typhimurium was the dominant serotype, and O:4(B) was the leading serogroup. The most prevalent genotype was ST40. Phenotypic antimicrobial resistance identified 66.7% of the sampled isolates as multi-drug resistant (MDR). S.Enteritidis (n = 7), S.Typhimurium (n = 1), S.Indiana (n = 1), S.Kentucky (n = 1), S.Uganda (n = 1), all of which were MDR, were resistant to Colistin. Resistance rates varied significantly across different strains and food types, particularly meat products exhibiting higher resistance. Notably, significant increases in resistance were observed from 2016 to 2021 for the following: ≥ 1 resistant (P = 0.001), MDR (P = 0.001), ampicillin (P = 0.001), tetracycline (P < 0.001), chloramphenicol (P = 0.030), and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (P = 0.003). The marked escalation in drug resistance over the recent years, coupled with the varying resistance rates among food sources, underscores the growing public health concern. Our findings highlight the need for a coordinated approach to effectively monitor and respond to Salmonella infections in Guizhou, China.

We evaluated the cross-context validity and equivalence of the US- and Canada-originated Retail Food Environment Index (RFEI) and modified RFEI (mRFEI) against a retail food environment dataset from the indigenous-majority city of Quetzaltenango (Xela), Guatemala. The RFEI/mRFEI failed to identify 77% of retailers and misclassified the healthiness of 42% of the remaining retailers in Xela, inaccurately labeling the city a food swamp. The RFEI/mRFEI are not currently suitable for mapping retail food environments in places like Quetzaltenango. Alternative functional and temporal classifications of retail food environments may provide measures with greater contextual fit, highlighting important cultural considerations for the study of place and dietary health.

An increasing number of regions have or are considering legalising the sale of cannabis for adult use. Experience from tobacco and alcohol regulation has found that greater access to physical retail stores is positively associated with increased substance use and harm. Whether this association exists for cannabis is unclear. We completed a systematic review examining the association between cannabis retail store access and adverse health outcomes. We identified articles up until July 20, 2023 by searching four databases. We included studies examining the association between measures of cannabis store access and adverse outcomes: frequent or problematic cannabis use, healthcare encounters due to cannabis use (e.g., cannabis-induced psychosis), and healthcare encounters potentially related to cannabis (e.g., self-harm episodes). Results were compared by study design type, retail access measure, and by subgroups including: children, adolescents, young adults, adults, and pregnant individuals. This review was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42021281788). The search generated 5750 citations of which we included 32 studies containing 44 unique primary analyses (unique retail measure and outcome pairs). Studies come from 4 countries (United States, Canada, Netherlands and Uruguay). Among the included analyses, there were consistent positive associations between greater cannabis retail access and 1) increased healthcare service use or poison control calls directly due to cannabis (10/12 analyses; 83%) (2) increased cannabis use and cannabis-related hospitalization during pregnancy (4/4; 100%) and 3) frequent cannabis use in adults and young adults (7/11; 64%). There was no consistent positive association between greater cannabis retail and increased frequent cannabis use in adolescents (1/4; 25%), healthcare service use potentially related to cannabis (2/6; 33%) or increased adverse neonatal birth outcomes (2/7; 26.8%). There is a positive association between greater cannabis store access and increases in cannabis harm. In countries with legal cannabis, retail restrictions may reduce use and harm. Limited studies have determined the effects of modified atmospheric packaging (MAP) on atypical dark-cutting beef surface color. The objective was to compare the impacts of using vacuum packaging, carbon monoxide (CO-MAP), and HiOx-MAP (high­oxygen) on the retail color of normal-pH and atypical dark-cutting beef aged 14 d. Atypical dark-cutting beef (pH 5.63) had numerically greater (P > 0.05) pH than normal-pH beef (pH 5.56). Atypical dark-cutting steaks were darker in color (lower L* values; P < 0.05) than normal-pH steaks. Atypical dark-cutting steaks had greater (P < 0.05) oxygen consumption, lower (P < 0.05) relative oxygenation, and less inter-muscle bundle space (P < 0.05) than normal-pH steaks. There were no differences (P > 0.05) in redness between normal-pH and atypical dark-cutting steaks when packaged in HiOx-MAP. Although a minimal increase in pH was observed in atypical dark-cutting beef, steaks in CO-MAP had lower redness than normal-pH steaks.

Helicobacter pullorum is an emerging foodborne pathogen that commonly colonizes the gastrointestinal tract of poultry, causing gastroenteritis. It has been related to several clinically important infections, including colitis and hepatitis, inflammatory bowel disease, recurrent diarrhea, and bacteremia in the human population. The bacterium may be transmitted to humans through undercooked poultry meat. In order to investigate the occurrence of H. pullorum in raw retail chicken meat (thighs and breasts), we analyzed 240 samples: 120 chicken thigh and 120 chicken breast samples. The samples were analyzed by means of an isolation protocol using Steele and McDermott's modified filtration technique on Brucella agar supplemented with 5% of defibrinated sheep's blood. The presumptive colonies were biochemically identified and analyzed using a previously described conventional PCR test based on the 16S rRNA gene. In total, 35% of analyzed samples were positive using the microbiological protocol and 45% were positive by PCR. These results suggest that H. pullorum can be transmitted to humans through the handling and consumption of raw poultry meat, representing a risk for food business operators and consumers. Efforts to control H. pullorum in broiler meat should prioritize the implementation of stringent hygienic practices across all stages of the food chain, from the farm to the consumer.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between the retail food environment and diet quality has received minimal investigation among weight loss maintainers. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the association between the residential retail food environment and diet quality in weight loss maintainers from WeightWatchers in the United States. DESIGN: Cross-sectional data were collected between January 2018 and February 2020. The Retail Food Environment Index (RFEI), based on geocoded home addresses, classified the environment as follows: RFEI <1.6 = healthiest; RFEI 1.6 to <2.5 = moderately healthy; RFEI 2.5 to <4.0 = moderately unhealthy; RFEI ≥4.0 = least healthy. Dietary data were obtained using a food frequency questionnaire. PARTICIPANTS/SETTING: Adult participants (n = 1,159) who had lost weight using WeightWatchers and maintained ≥9.1-kg weight loss for ≥1 year (mean 24.7-kg loss for 3.4 years). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Healthy Eating Index 2015 (HEI-2015) component and total scores (0-100; higher scores indicate better alignment with the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans). STATISTICAL ANALYSES PERFORMED: Regression models included RFEI category, the independent variable, and HEI-2015 and component scores (outcomes) controlling for age, sex, race and ethnicity, educational attainment, and household income. RESULTS: Compared with individuals living in the healthiest food environments (mean HEI-2015 score = 71.5) those in the unhealthiest environments had a mean HEI-2015 score of 70.1 (95% CI 68.8 to 71.3), those in moderately unhealthy environments had a score of 71.3 (95% CI 70.3 to 73.1) and those in moderately healthy environments had a score of 70.3 (95% CI 68.9 to 71.2), indicating a nonlinear relationship. Compared with those in the healthiest environments, those in the least healthy environments had an approximately 0.47 lower added sugar HEI-2015 component score (95% CI -0.86 to -0.08), indicating approximately 5% higher added sugar intake. CONCLUSIONS: Weight loss maintainers maintained high diet quality in diverse retail food environments. Compared with those in the healthiest food environments, those in the least healthy had a higher consumption of added sugars.
